The types of HPC Software

Commercial Software
The typical offering is an extremely complex piece of software. Software companies have increased the complexity to justify a larger sales price. Hardly anyone mentions that you need AT LEAST one systems administrator and AT LEAST one systems programmer. Often you need more. These types of individuals are in high demand especially from the Software as a Service Industry who will typically pay more than a typical corporation. RQJ is an anomaly since it is specifically designed to remove the need for the expensive support personnel.
Open Source Software
Most of the packages are much older commercial packages that have been released to the public domain. All of the commercial offering comments apply. Most of the packages cannot be reliably compiled anymore since you have to find old build environments, old libraries and retired compilers that often cannot be built on modern operating systems. Need a patch? Great. Get to work and hope you can provide a working patch in a timely fashion!
Roll Your Own Software
This is probably the worst of the options. All the previous comments apply here. Typically you will have to rely on a single individual with unique skill sets that is in high demand from other companies. Trying to replicate this individual is daunting to say the least. Potentially, you can lose all of your HPC abilities overnight.

Why HPC choices matter

The main issues are:

How much grief, time, manpower and money are you willing to commit to maintaining a HPC cluster?
How much management time are you willing to commit?
Is there an option that "just works" without lots of bells and whistles?
What is the easiest implementation and operational requirements package?

Ultimately, if you choose any other package besides RQJ, you are committing to a on-going maintence headache at best.

How can I avoid the pitfalls in HPC Software?

The only method we know of is to have simpler software and software specifically created to automatically install and correct itself (which is why we wrote RQJ). Most software companies have chosen to write software that relies on the external knowledge of senior system administrators and senior programmers. You either need to pay for a team to support the cluster or you don't. Period. If you don't want to pay for a team, you need RQJ.
